My Story
Hi, I’m Taso
I founded Garbis Law to give small businesses and entrepreneurs access to the same quality IP protection that larger companies take for granted. My practice is focused on helping you identify and protect the intellectual property assets that make your business valuable.
When working with me, you’ll quickly find out that I’m not looking to squeeze the most fees out of you. I’ll review your matter, tell you what I actually think, and lay out the options available to you. The goal is to get you the protection you need while avoiding unnecessary expenses.
With over 15 years of experience, I’ve represented clients across a wide range of industries from restaurants and breweries to cannabis companies, fitness professionals, e-commerce brands, and everything in between. Having grown up in the restaurant industry, I’ve developed a particular focus on the food and beverage space, which led me to build a dedicated practice at restauranttrademarks.com— a resource specifically for restaurant owners who want to protect their brand the right way.
I live in the western suburbs of Chicago with my wife, two kids, and our miniature dachshund Cinnamon. When I’m not protecting your brand or being bossed around by my kids, you’ll likely find me in the gym, or in the garage working on a DIY project or building furniture from scratch.

Learn. Teach. Protect.
First, we need to determine if we're a good fit. During our initial consultation, I take the time to learn about you and your business while discussing how I can help.
Intellectual property law is confusing. We discuss the process in a way you actually understand. Armed with this knowledge, you'll be able to make informed decisions about your brand.
Once we've agreed on a plan, it's time to execute. I'll perform the agreed-upon services carefully and efficiently, answering any questions along the way. You'll always know where things stand.

Common Questions
FAQ
Can you represent clients outside of Illinois?
Yes. I represent clients located throughout the United States and internationally. Trademark law is federal, so location is never a barrier.
What happens during the initial consultation?
The initial consultation is a free 15-minute call to get an idea of whether we’re a good fit. You can expect general information about your topic and what it’s like working with me. One thing you should not expect is specific legal advice — that comes after an engagement letter has been signed and an attorney-client relationship has been established.
Do you charge flat fees or hourly?
The majority of my practice is built around a flat-fee model. I think it’s extremely important for you to know how much something costs from the beginning — it helps you budget properly and avoids being surprised by additional fees. There are a few scenarios where an hourly fee is necessary, and that will always be discussed with you upfront.
What if I don't know if I need a patent, trademark, or copyright?
You’re not alone. Clients often call saying they need a patent when they really need a trademark, and vice versa. I’ll explain the terminology in plain English so you understand exactly what you’re getting. The important thing is that you’re taking the first step to protect valuable assets — which is unfortunately something many businesses overlook until it’s too late.
